Plot:
The movie portrays Eddie Edwards attempts and efforts to participate in the Olympics as a ski jumper. While his mother supports him fervently in his attempts, his father discourages and dissuades him. Eddie, undeterred, travels to Germany for training. However, he becomes a subject of mockery and humiliation by the better trained and older participants. Eddie self-trains himself and completes a 40-meter jump. During his practice sessions, he strikes up a friendship with alcoholic Bronson Peary played by Jackman. Peary, a former ski jumping champion decides to mentor Eddie. The movie then flows through the difficulties faced by the duo. Eddie successfully bags himself a spot in the Olympics and Represents Britain for the first time in the sport. Though he emerges last in the competition, he achieves worldwide acclaim and his father, as well as the British Olympic officials, accepts him.
Analysis:
Eddie the Eagle is a beautifully crafted inspirational biopic. Eddie melts the heart of the viewer with his child-like innocence and staunch determination. The movie celebrates sportsman spirit and the spirit to participate, and hold your head up even when faced with failure and ridicule. The movie successfully portrays Eddie as a naïve and clumsy though superbly determining child at the same time. It's hard not to love Eddie and the chemistry that he shares with his coach. However, the movie uses the lost career and loneliness of Peary to sustain its momentum very often.
Star Performances:
Egerton charms the audience by portraying himself as the hero of the underdog. When the movie ends, the audience is moved to respect the child, who was throughout a subject of ridicule and mockery. Hugh Jackman is at his best and beautifully portrays the role of the brooding alcoholic man whose charming career took a turn for the worse.
What’s there?
1. Hugh Jackman and Taron Egerton perfectly complement each other and frees each other's spirits through their partnership.
2. Eddie’s stubborn determination is depicted humorously.
What’s not there?
1. There is no screen time devoted to the dangers of ski jumping, especially when one is not trained enough.
2. The movie though inspirational is quite clichéd.
Verdict:
Eddie the Eagle is sure to raise your spirits. It is no doubt a must-watch movie in spite of its clichés and lack of surprises.
