Directed and written by Daniel Lee Daniel Lee whose full name is Daniel Lee Yan-Kong, >> Read More... , Dragon Blade Click to look into! >> Read More... is an action-adventure film produced by Jackie Chan, Susanna Tsang, and Leo Zhang. Starring Jackie Chan as Huo An, a Silk Road peacekeeper who partners with Lucius, an off-base Roman general ( John Cusack He is renowned actor, talented screenwriter and pr >> Read More... ) to protect a young prince. Adrien Brody plays the ruthless Tiberius, and Lin Peng is Cold Moon. Choi Si-won plays Yin Po and Sharni Vinson plays Lady Crassus. The movie fuses epic-scale war drama with sock-knocking action.

Plot

In Dragon Blade (2015), Huo An (Jackie Chan) heads the Silk Road Protection Squad, a band of warriors who are trying to keep the peace between the tribes that live along the trade route. But he and his men are wrongfully accused of smuggling gold and condemned to hard labour at Wild Geese Gate, a dilapidated border town. While they fight for their lives, a Roman legion accompanied by General Lucius (John Cusack) arrives, looking for sanctuary after fleeing the bloodthirsty Roman consul Tiberius ( Adrien Brody Adrien Brody was born in a place called Woodhaven >> Read More... ), who wants little more than to kill the young prince Publius and usurp the throne. Recognizing a common foe, Huo An and Lucius become unlikely allies, melding Chinese and Roman approaches to warfare to repair their fortress and defend the innocent. Through a shared sense of honor and justice, their alliance fosters cohesion among their disparate armies. But Tiberius’ monstrous army marches closer as they prepare to defend the city and wipe out their enemies. Outnumbered and with a traitor in their midst, can Huo An and Lucius beat the odds and defeat the tyrant before the Silk Road descends into chaos? Or are they fated to have their alliance crushed by naked power?

Star Performance

Endowed with phenomenal emotional and action chops, Jackie Chan deftly combines martial artistry with heroic leadership in Huo An, ultimately elevating the film with Dragon Blade (2015) stronger than ever. John Cusack as General Lucius is hot as hell, Adrien Brody is menacingly power-hungry as Tiberius. Ambitious, visually astute and set in 228 A.D., director Daniel Lee’s marriage of East and West imagines new frontiers for a historical epic. The cinematography showcases sweeping desert vistas and fierce battle scenes with energetic camerawork. Although the film drags in parts, its sheer size, action choreography and especially its themes of togetherness make it a compelling watch.

Analysis

A Chinese-language historical action movie from 2015 that ambitiously tries to blend Chinese storytelling with Western Hollywood-style spectacle, Dragon Blade's intended mission is to unify and bridge cultures through a story of peace and fraternity. Director Daniel Lee delivers a stunning epic, bolstered by impressive battle sequences and scale-worthy production design. Jackie Chan shines with a warm and sincere performance, managing to extract both action and emotion from the material, while John Cusack and Adrien Brody provide lots of international star power, even if their characters often feel like they have been cut from the same cloth. While the cinematography handles the widescreen vistas and grand battle set pieces well, the screenplay struggles with tonal inconsistencies, alternating between overwrought drama and forced sentimentality. Although the film’s crux of peace strikes a chord, its pacing issues and at times heavy-handed messaging detract from its impact. The action choreography still shines, mixing Chan’s stunts with a large-scale war dance. Dragon Blade is an inspired historical fable, but it is not quite a complete one.

What’s There?

  • A unique blend of Chinese and Western influences, promoting themes of unity and peace.
  • Well-executed fight sequences blending martial arts with large-scale warfare.

What’s Not There?

  • Shifts awkwardly between serious historical drama and sentimental storytelling.

Verdict

Dragon Blade (2015) is a splendid looking action-adventure that breaks new ground by seamlessly combining Eastern and Western influences with Jackie Chan’s strong performance at its core. Regarding action choreography and cinematography, the film deserves credits yet it suffers from uneven pacing, underdeveloped characters, and tonal inconsistencies. It was going, and there they fucking all went.
