Plot
Childhood friends Amar, Akbar, and Tony come from different social and economic backgrounds but stick together no matter what comes next and face ridiculous situations with each other.
Star performance
Martin Delaney is sort of a standout in this mess of a film. His comic timing is good. Rest of the actors are just doing what the director is telling them to do which is taking the stereotype to its core, it gets frustrating after a point. Also the film being Indian Diaspora most of the actors are white. Even two main leads are supposed to be Indian/Brown the actors are white, which leaves no room for authenticity.
Analysis
Despite the film’s title reference to the 1977 Bollywood Classic, it has no relevance to it. The title is only used to attract the Indian diaspora. The only saving grace in this mess of a film is Martin Delaney as Tony. His comic timing is good and somewhat tries to save this film. Now let's get to brasstacks, first the film is majorly focused on the Indian Diaspora living in England yet none of the leads are from that background or origin, which leaves no room for authenticity. Second, the film is filled with Asian/Indian stereotypes. There is nothing wrong in making jokes about it, but if you’re making that main goal then you need to do better. Atul Malhotra as the writer and director is confused in what to showcase, he’s heavily dependent on stereotypes which doesn't pan out well, the jokes don’t land, there is no vision, and no character development. Adding subplots just worsens the film at one moment its comedy the next it's drama (extreme drama). The film could’ve been a simple feel good film but these additions, way too many subplots, and the director’s lack of vision lets the film down. Amar Akbar & Tony has no relevance to the Bollywood film and to the subjects it wanted to focus on.
