Tamilnadu government canceled the land allotted to the Sterlite Company for its expansion. After a huge protest against the Sterlite company that polluted the air and water in Thoothukudi and created health hazards, the government closed the Copper company in Thoothukudi. The protest against the factory turned violent and 13 people were killed. Following this, the entire state started supporting the Thoothukudi people and a lot of political parties and the film industry stood for Thoothukudi people. Yesterday, the factory was sealed by the collector Sandeep Nanduri. The plant was shut down for annual maintenance for 15 days and when they applied for renewal, the Tamilnadu Pollution Control Board denied giving the license, as the government has planned to shut it down. The Sterlite factory produces 4 lakh tonnes per year and by extending the plant, they planned to double up the production. SIPCOT director told that the government will return the money received for the extension of the land, which is 343 acres.
