Ramya Wants To Solve Cauvery Issue Amicably!
Ramya alias Divya Spandana Divya Spandana, born on November 29, 1982, known >> Read More... has been deeply involved in politics. When both Karnataka and Tamilnadu fight for the Cauvery water, Ramya states that the issue should be sorted out amicably. She took it to her Facebook and posted that the water problem exists not only in Karnataka or India but the whole world. Earlier, I had some lengthy discussions regarding water scarcity with my father and what I came to know from the discussions was that if we don't save water and use it judiciously, we might witness world war over water. Right from 2008 I have been writing articles about the Cauvery and sharing my views for Karnataka and Tamil Nadu people. As the Cauvery issue has reached a critical stage, the dispute has gained special attention. According to 1892 and 1924 agreement, 380 TMC water has to be released to Tamilnadu. Now this has been reduced to 192 TMC. But it is impossible to release the same amount of water during the scanty rainfall. In this regard, Karnataka government has filed pleas in the Supreme Court and the hearing is in next month. If the Supreme Court orders the state government to release 192 TMC of water, we have to concentrate on water conservation to solve the water issue in the coming years. When Chief Minister Siddaramaiah called all-party meeting to discuss the Supreme Court directive to release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu, I was also present. I requested the CM to release water to Mandya farmers on a priority basis, which he accepted. Although the farmers fought for silently, unfortunately, violence broke out in Bangalore and other parts of the state. Here are mu suggestions to solve the water crisis: 1. Illegal sand mining should be prevented. 2. Dams should be modernised. We have 12 Dams in Mandya district. 1TMC water could help the irrigation of Two-thousand acres of agricultural land. So if the dams are modernised, they could provide water for 4,000 acres of land. 3. Earlier, Tamilnadu had 16,000 acres for irrigation. Now, they have 28,000 acres. In Karnataka, we have 80,000 acres of sugarcane land, but in court, they identified only 40,000 acres. So, we have to look for other sources of water for the remaining 40,000 acres of land. 4. Farmers need to cultivate crops that require a minimum amount of water. They also should install drip irrigation to prevent wastage of water. Authorities should provide seeds and devices that are essential for drip irrigation. 5. Western Ghats forests should be protected so that it will get adequate rainfall every year. Scientific conservation of water is a must. Recently I met advocate Fali S Nariman, who have a vast knowledge regarding water laws. We should not blame a person of such stature when the problem lies in laws and agreements. Above all, water is for the living; it should not be made as a political issue. Let us try to solve it amicably.”
