The outspoken scholar has been receiving threats from the Hindu activists due to his alleged anti-religious assertions about the groups such as ABVP, VHP and the Bajrang Dal.
While the police were currently on the lookout to capture the murderer, a head of a Hindu fundamentalist group has apparently taken all the responsibility for murdering the professor; they even sent out threats to other radical thinkers.

Dharwad was known to be a place where people voiced out when they have opinions. Deshpande adds that Kalburgi met him to talk about the manuscripts relating to his father during his term as a Vice-Chancellor.
The sudden death of the Sahitya Academy Award winner MM Kalburgi came as a shock to many Twitterati as well. Sandalwood actors and actresses took to their Twitter page to deprecate the murder and expressed their devastations.
