With the stretch of unfortunate events kicking off in 2020, the year that went by has been cruel to the entire world, particularly the film industry. Due to the pandemic, the shootings of films have halted, and subsequently, film releases have been postponed indefinitely. Apart from that, the entertainment industry has lost some of the most remarkable celebrities and the absence of these stars has created a void that cannot be filled. From Dilip Sahab, Sushant Singh Rajput to Chadwick Boseman and Helen McCrory, here are the legends who left us during the last year.

1. Dilip Kumar

Legendary actor Dilip Kumar passed away at the age of 98. He made his debut as an actor in the film ‘Jwar Bhata’ in 1944, produced by Bombay Talkies. His career has spanned over six decades with over 60 films. He was laid to rest with full state honors at Juhu Kabristan around 4:30 pm on July 7. The funeral was attended by Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan. Various other celebrities like Shah Rukh Khan, Vidya Balan, Ranbir Kapoor and Karan Johar arrived at Dilip Kumar’s residence to pay their last respects.

2. Rishi Kapoor

Ace Bollywood actor Rishi Kapoor passed away in Mumbai at the age of 67, following a two-year-long battle with leukemia. He began his career as a child artist in ‘Mera Naam Joker’ (1970), for which he received the National Award. A third-generation actor, Rishi Kapoor, was the second son of actor Raj Kapoor and grandson of Prithviraj Kapoor. Rishi Kapoor’s last film was ‘102 Not Out’ co-starring his dear friend Amitabh Bachchan, where the latter played Kapoor’s centenarian father.

3. Irrfan Khan

Legendary actor Irrfan Khan breathed his last after losing his battle with cancer, at the age of 54. He made his mark in both international and Indian cinema. He was the most recognised Asian actor in world cinema. He was known for his versatility. Irrfan is best known for his unforgettable performances in films like ‘Maqbool’, ‘Pikoo’ and ‘The Namesake’.

4. Sushant Singh Rajput

Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput was found dead at his apartment in Bandra, at the age of 34. Before making his debut on the big screen in 2013 with ‘Kai Po Che’, his performance as Manav Deshmukh in the TV show ‘Pavitra Rishta’ won lots of hearts. He won numerous accolades for his performance in ‘M.S.Dhoni: The Untold Story’, ‘Sonchiriya’, and ‘Chhichore’, among others.

5. Siddharth Shukla

Siddharth Shukla made his TV debut with ‘Babul Ka Aangann Chootey Na’ in 2008 and went on to act in many more shows. In 2014, he made his Bollywood debut in ‘Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania’. The film was successful and brought even more fame to the actor. His popularity soared further after he won the 13th edition of the famous reality TV show Bigg Boss. But the sudden news of his death due to a cardiac arrest came as a shock to the TV industry.

6. Asif Basra

Bollywood actor Asif Basra was found dead in a private complex in the hilly northern city of Dharamshala on November 12. The actor was found hanging in the complex when the police reached the spot. While the reason for him resorting to the extreme step is still not known, the Himachal Pradesh police are investigating the matter.

7. Nishikant Kamat

Director and actor Nishikant Kamat passed away, at the age of 50, in Hyderabad, after a battle with liver cirrhosis. The director was recognized for helming movies such as ‘Dombivali Fast’, ‘Mumbai Meri Jaan’, ‘Force’, ‘Drishyam’, ‘Rocky Handsome’, and ‘Madaari’. As an actor, he was known for his performances in films like ‘Daddy’, ‘Rocky Handsome’, ‘Julie 2’, and ‘Bhavesh Joshi’. His directorial debut ‘Dombivali Fast’ (2005), won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Marathi.

8. Raj Kaushal

Mandira Bedi’s husband, Raj Kaushal died at the age of 50 after he suffered a cardiac arrest. The famous Indian director, producer, and stunt director is best known for his work in Bollywood in the 1990s and 2000s. He has directed films like ‘Pyaar Mein Kabhi Kabhi’ and ‘Shaadi Ka Laddoo’. His last rites were performed by his wife Mandira Bedi.

9. Bikramjeet Kanwarpal

Famous TV and film actor Bikramjeet Kanwarpal passed away, at the age of 52, due to COVID-19. The news of his death broke out after film producer Ashoke Pandit grieved the loss of the talented artist on Twitter as “Sad to hear about the demise of actor Major Bikramjeet Kanwarpal this morning due to Covid”. A retired army officer, Kanwarpal had played supporting roles in many films and television serials.

10. Amit Mistry

Amit Mistry was a well-recognised theatre, TV, and film actor, best known for his work in Gujarati theatre and Bollywood films like ‘Shor in the City’, ‘Saat Pheron Ki Hera Pheri’, ‎’Dafa 420’, and most recently in the OTT show ‘Bandish Bandits’. He passed away at the age of 47 due to a cardiac issue.
