20 Movies Banned By The Censor Board Of India

Bollywood produces the largest number of movies every year amongst which few of them go unreleased because of their objectionable content. Censor Board of India regulates the public exhibition of films. In many of the movies scenes with offensive content are removed from the film as suggested by the censor board but the Censor Board ban the movies which consist unpleasant language, vulgarity, obscenity or which harms the harmony of the society. There are many such movies which were banned and the audience is unaware of those films and their content. Here are some of the movies which were banned:

1. Bandit Queen

This movie was a thriller with the high degree of violence, offensive language and substance abuse as well. The audience were very excited for the film to release but the Censor Board banned the movie but the pirated version of the movie was also available and people made to watch it somehow.

It was on the famous book named Black Friday – The True Story Of Bombay Bomb Blasts the author of this book is S Hussain Zaidi. Anurag Kashyap directed the movie in 2004. The trial of the Bombay Blast was going on at that time therefore; the film faced a stay order from the court.

8. Parzania

The plot and cinematography of the film were excellent. The film also won a National Award and it the work done by all the people involved, was applauded but the political parties did not want the screening of the movie in Gujarat therefore later it got banned in Gujarat.

9. Sins

This direction of the film was done in 2005 and it was made brilliantly, but the Censor Board thought that the Catholicism is shown morally wrong and it also had issues with the nude scenes in the film. The movie was on the journey of a priest in Kerala who was involved physically with a woman; as a result, he struggled with the standards of the society because he was obsessed with that woman.

10. Water

The director of the movie was Deepa Mehta. Anurag Kashyap wrote the script of the film and the story of the film revolves around an Indian widow who lived in an Ashram of Varanasi. Controversial issues like Ostracism and Misogyny depicted in the film which the Censor Board did not want to make them public. In 2000 the people who were against the movie destroyed the sets of the movie as well.

11. Firaaq

This movie is about riots in Gujarat which is a real incident. Nandita Das was cast in the movie and people felt that she had hurt the sentiments of Hindus and Muslims but the movie got released and critic’s reviews were for the movie and the audiences applauded it the most, but it got banned later by the Censor Board.

12. Gandu

The name of the movie itself defines the kind of the movie. This movie get banned by the Censor Board of India because it had a higher degree of vulgarity and nudity. The Bengali movie shot in black and white format and it consists of oral sex scenes which challenge Indian Sensibility.

13. Inshallah, Football

This movie gets banned by the Censor Board of India because it was made on a very sensitive issue. The movie is about a Kashmiri boy who loved traveling but he couldn’t because his father was in charged with militancy. The film was related to the problems that people face during revolts in Kashmir Valley.

In 2015 this movie also followed the long list of the movies that are banned. This movie is a thriller and depicted a strange love story of a lesbian who intertwined within Islamic terrorism. The certification of the movie was done by the censor of India board; therefore, this was only released in few states because of its nude and vulgar love making scenes.

16. Kissa Kursi Ka

This movie was a political satire and it was done during the time when Indira Gandhi ruled over the country. Many people supported the party very much and didn’t want a movie like this to be made therefore the supporters burned the film posters and protested against the film and finally, the film was banned.

17. Garam Hawa

The film is about a Muslim family during the partition of the two countries India and Pakistan. The Censor Board was worried about the riots because the movie was on a sensitive issue and it could trigger communal riots in the country, therefore; the censor board banned the movie for eight months, but later it was certified by the censor board. This film was also shown to the different political parties, leaders, government, officials, etc.

18. Aandhi

The movie typically based on Indira Gandhi’s life. It get done during the time when she ruled the country. It depicted her personal life and the movie gets banned because of the emergency in 1975 and then it got released when Bhartiya Janta Party came into existence with the majority in 1977.

19. Amu

This movie is about the massacre of Sikhs during the assassination of Indira Gandhi. This film was also banned because it was also a threat to the serene of the country, the Censor Board suggested few cuts but the movie gets banned.

20. Main Hoon Part-Time Killer

Earlier, the name of the movie, was Main Hoon Rajnikanth it was a satire which was about him, therefore, Rajnikanth the famous South Indian actor took the movie to court. After that, the name of the movie was changed, but then it was still banned by the Censor Board of India. These were the few movies that get banned by the Censor Board of India, but there are many more movies that are banned. Some movies depict some issues that people need to know and the movies are knowledgeable as well. Directors and actors work hard to make the movies and few of them are completed brilliantly but norms of the country should be respected and movies should be done according to that. Content that harms the integrity of the country and is vulgar and obscene should not made public because all age groups watch the movies.
