Vijaya Nirmala is a Guinness Record holder as the female director to direct the highest number of films. She entered in the Guinness Book in 2002 for directing 44 Telugu films. She was born on 20th February 1946 in a well known Telugu Family from Andhra, Tamil Nadu.
She is a prominent Indian actress, producer, and director whose main field of work is Telugu Cinema. Vijaya Nirmala set her foot in cinema at the age of eleven, as a child artist with Panduranga Mahatmyam in 1957. In the year 1964, she starred opposite and rose to stardom with Malayalam hit Bhargavi Nilayam. And in 1967, she starred again opposite Prem Nazir in Udhyogastha by P. Venu.
She enteres into Telugu film industry through the film Rangula Ratnam. Engaveettu Penn was Nirmala’s debut film in Tamil, which was followed by movies including Panama Paasama, En Annan, Gnanaoli, and Uyira. She met her second husband Krishna on the sets of Saakshi (1967), her second film in Telugu, and they starred together in as many as 47 films. This movie inspired her in direction. To date, she has acted in over 200 films with 25 each in Malayalam and Tamil, and the rest in Telugu.
Pelli Kanuka, a Television show, was her small screen debut, which was a Balaji Telefilm production. In a very short time, she launched her own banner named ‘Vijaya Krishna Movies’ and produced 15 films. Her first directed movie was a Malayalam film on a budget of Rs. 3 lakhs. She made her directional debut in Telugu with ‘
’ and directed 40 films in Telugu. And one film each in Malayalam and Tamil (Kungumachimizh).
In 2008, she received the Raghupathi Venkaiah Award for her huge contributions to Telugu cinema. Vijaya Nirmala’s father has worked in film production also. She has a son, Naresh, who is also an actor, from her first marriage. After the death of her first husband, she married actor Krishna. Currently, this actor- director is living in Hyderabad and managing Padmalaya Studios and Padmalaya Telefilms Ltd.
