Vamsi Patchipulusu

Vamsi Patchipulusu is an Indian cinematographer who hails from Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, and he primarily works in the South Indian film industry. Although being a highly sought-after cinematographer in the industry, Vamsi did not receive any formal education in this field. He has a degree in biotechnology and microbiology and he began his journey to his career by being extremely passionate about photography during his college days. Vamsi initially struggled to break through into the industry so he earned through wedding photography and corporate photoshoots and he developed his skills in cinematography by working as an assistant in several films. Vamsi enrolled in workshops where he would meet highly esteemed cinematographers like MV Raghu and Sabu James who would mentor him and improve his skills.

They also gave him his first job in the film industry as an associate for the movie ‘Gangaputrulu’ in 2011. He worked on the films ‘Bejawada’ (2011) and ‘KISS: Keep It Simple Stupid’ (2013) as a second assistant cameraman and a first assistant cameraman respectively. He officially started his career in 2016 with the film ‘Kshanam’ as a camera operator. Later that year, he would assume the same position on another project, ‘Naruda Donurada’. In 2018, Vamsi worked on the film ‘Goodachari’ as a second-unit cameraman and a second-unit director of photography. Vamsi finally made his debut as a cinematographer with the release of the film ‘Evaru’ in 2019. Although that was his first credit as a cinematographer, Vamsi’s first foray into cinematography was with the Telugu film ‘28 Degrees Celsius’ which was directed by Dr. Anil Viswanath and produced by Sai Abhishek.

He would later go on to work on more films like ‘Varudu Kaavalenu’ (2021), ‘Major’ (2022) and ‘Butta Bomma’ (2023). Vamsi said that he holds very high regard for Adivi Sesh, the actor with whom he worked on films such as ‘KISS: Keep It Simple Stupid’ (2013), ‘Kshanam’ (2016), ‘Goodachari’ (2018), ‘Evaru’ (2019) and ‘Major’ (2022). The cinematographer’s main influences are the films from the 1990s and he says that he wishes that he could have been able to work in the film industry during that time as he enjoys that era of filmmaking very much. He also said that the genre which he enjoys working on the most is dramas. One of his main beliefs as a cinematographer is that it is his duty to bring to life the vision of the director.
