Mandolin U.P. Raju is a Carnatic musician from Palakol, West Godavari District in Andhra Pradesh. He received his training for seven years from R Subbaraju. Subbaraju was the disciple of Chembai Vaidhyanadha Baghavathar. Subbaraju was the pioneer in introducing Mandolin to the classical music field. UP Raju developed his knowledge in Gamakas from Subbaraju. Raju has performed in a lot of sabhas in Chennai. He has also conducted musical concerts in various overseas locations including USA, Canada, Australia, South Africa, and France.
Raju is one of the regular performers in Chennai’s December Music Festival. Raju is married to Nagamani. They both perform together and have been addressed as the Mandolin duo. UP Raju has been taking online classes for people in Switzerland, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, and France.
All India Radio assessed him as an A Grade artist in 1997 in Chennai. He was given the epithet Shruti Laya Samrat in 1999 at Saraswathi Gana Sabha in Cuddalore. Bharat Kalachar honored him with the Yuva Kala Bharathi Award. He was made Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam’s Asthana Vidwan in 2013. In 2018, Gandharva Gana Sabha awarded him Gandharava Kala Ratna. He was honored as Iasai Tamil Vendhar by Tamil Isai Maiyyam, Chennai.
