Padmashri Manik Varma was one of the legendary classical singers in Indian film and musical history. Varma was known for her style of classical singing, and those are, Khyal, Kirana Gharana, and Agra Gharana. Manik Varma was born on 16 May 1926 and died at the age of 70 on 10 November 1996. She was the daughter of Hirabai and Balwant Dadarkar. Not just classical, but Varma has established herself as a well-versed singer in many formats such as semi-classical, folk, light music, Natya Sangeet, and thumri. She was one of the most favourite singers as her singing was loved by so many people. Manik found her talent for singing at a very young age and started training for it with her mother’s support. Initially, she trained under Bhope Guruji at Pune’s Bharatiya Gayan Samaj.

Later she was trained by some legends like Sureshbabu Mane Suresh Babu Mane hails from Mumbai, Maharashtra. She was applauded and loved by many for her talent, which she acquired from learning and combining many singing styles. Her songs from “Geet Ramayan,” an All India Radio show about Ramayana, were a glorious hit. She was also bestowed with many honourable awards such as Padma Shri from the Indian Government, Maharashtra Gaurav, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1986, and Ga. Di. Ma. Puraskar. In the later stages of her life, Manik spent her time with her family and her career. All four of her daughters were well established in the entertainment industry, be it in singing, acting, etc. To honour her legacy, Manik Varma Pratishthan was set up in Mumbai to provide scholarships and conduct musical functions on her birth and death anniversary. The Pratisthan also presents the Manik Ratna Award.
