P Madhuri is an Indian playback singer. She mainly works in the South Indian film industry. Madhuri gave her voice for various songs in Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam. She has got the Kerala State Film Award twice for a best playback singer. Madhuri took birth as Shivagnanam in a place named Tiruchirappalli. She was born in a Tamil family in 1943.
She married to V Jayaram when she was thirteen years old. Madhuri became the mother of two children by 16. She worked in an amateur drama group when popular Malayalam music director G Devarajan incidentally watched one of her performances at Madras (Chennai). Madhuri was introduced to movies by Devarajan via Kadalppalam (1969), in which she gave her voice for the popular Mappila song Kasthuri Thailamitu Mudi Minuki. Devarajan carefully picked her and groomed Madhuri into one of the finest and successful Malayalam singers of all time. Madhuri mainly sang Malayalam songs.
She was notably the third most popular female singer after P.Susheela and S Janki in Malayalam during the 1970s. Madhuri mainly sang songs which were composed by G Devarajan Master. She recorded her voice in a total of 552 songs in the Malayalam language most of which are under G Devarajan.
This is a type of record in the Malayalam film industry which no other female playback signers can claim. Madhuri sang several folk songs, classical songs, devotional songs, classical songs, romantic songs, and sad songs under her credit, but what gained her most popularity was the ability to sing in high pitch voice. Madhuri worked for all the music directors of that time, except MS Baburaj.
