Kannur Shareef is a Malayalam playback singer known for his renditions of Mappilapattu, a popular musical genre in the Malabar region of the southern Indian state of Kerala. Despite shooting to fame, thanks to his music albums and stage shows, he could not find a stable place in the Malayalam movie industry for a long time. However, that changed after his performance in Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Kerala, where his rendition of Raveendran’s “Devasabhathalam” was widely appreciated. Shareef has had a career lasting 31 years now, and he has gone through various ups and downs during that period.
At the beginning of his career, he used to sing bhajans in temples. Being one of Kannur’s most significant contributions to music earned him the tag of “brand ambassador of Mappilapattu.” However, it was through the reality singing shows “Mylanchi” and “Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Keralam” that he became a household name. In his chase for success, he also prioritized training younger children in the art of music by being a judge in the two reality shows. While training the next generation of playback singers in these two shows, he always advises them to learn from his life and never shy away from flaunting their talents.
