Sooraj S Kurup

Sooraj S Kurup is a Malayalam music director who works in Indian film industry. He composes music predominately for Malayalam films and is well known for his work in Solo. Born in Kottayam Sooraj completed his studies from CMS high school in Nedungadappally. After this, he did graduation from CMS College of his hometown itself studying BA triple main in communicative English, literature, and journalism. For further studies, he took admission in Music lounge school of audio technology in audio engineering. During his school days Sooraj used to participate in different music competitions at school youth festival and was skilled in mridangam, but his interest was in filmmaking. He tells in an interview that his mother used to take him and his younger brother Dheeraj in school youth festivals.

He started making music’s too but only for himself. Also while pursuing an undergraduate degree from CMS College he used to make mini films and scored music for the same as well. He further tells some of the crucial moments in his life when he had to choose between music and studies. To continue both, he convinced his parents to study audio engineering from Stephen Devassy’s institution and moved to Chennai. After moving to Chennai he worked in ads, recording sessions and other small ventures like background scoring, etc. Later he resoluted to hurl into pictures and started his career as a film composer and scorer in 2016 through valleem thetti pulleem theetti.

The film was not so well received, but the tracks were appreciated. In 2017 he came up with four releases alamara, sakhavu, solo and crossroad among which he had been highly appreciated for solo. He composed the duet seethe kalyanam for the movie which is an anthology of four stories, consisting of songs by eleven composers among which Sooraj prepared the song for story “world of Rudra”. He also sang and did the background scoring. The recognition that he received after working in the film of one of the exquisite directors in the industry made him a celebrity in the cinema world. In 2018 he composed music for the movie Luca.
