While writers, poets and lyricists, and even directors have been galore from Uttar Pradesh, in the Hindi movie industry, in the matter of actors and actresses, it has not been truly representative of its size as the largest state of India. True, it can boast of the and Shabana Azmis, but Bollywood has traditionally been populated by actors and actresses from Punjab, Bengal, and even from the South and the western states of Maharashtra and Gujarat, leaving UP disproportionately underrepresented in the acting arena.

Whether the entry of young actresses like Samreen Zaidi, born, brought up, and educated in Lucknow would give a boost to higher presence of UP actors and actresses in the Indian firm industry, is to be seen. That actresses nowadays do not have any qualms in starting their careers in regional films which are not in their own native tongues, is a sure sign of a keenness to pick up any opportunity for acting. In fact, Samreen started her career in a Telegu movie, and had to wait for some time to get her break in a Hindi movie. It was in “Mumbai Cutting” that she played a romantic role with in one of the many short stories contained in the film, directed by fellow UP-ite, Manish Jha.

Eyeing the TV scene, Samreen discretely reveals that she has already been signed up for a lead role in one of the TV serials for a major channel, but is reluctant to spill out the details, only saying that it is in the stages of being frozen. Although she herself seems hesitant to come up with the details, it is gathered from sources that the serial is about the theme of widow re-marriage, and is poignantly titled as “Vidhwa”.
