He was the director of illustrious plays like “Nayak Katha”, “Hara Samander Gopichander”, “Kya Number Badlega”, “Suryast”, “Kumarswami” and “Chhatriya”. He won a Gold Medal from the Department of Indian Theater (Punjab University), Chandigarh. He also launched his son, at the age of 12, as an actor in the telefilm “Tapish”. Other than acting, he also engaged Kanu in giving him the task of being an Assistant Director. Lalit did not get the opportunity to branch into the film industry until his son, Kanu, offered him the role of Daddy in the film “Titli.” Although initially, due to having a tense relationship with his son, Kanu, Lalit did not want to be apart of “Titli,” but after a little deliberation and little convincing from his wife he decided to give it a try.

Lalit claims that he was not given the entire script of the movie and had not had any idea what the film was about, it was later when the complete film premiered in France that he realized the central theme of the movie. Despite his personal disapproval of certain elements of the flick, he showed his professional finesse and he accepted that he could have a creative difference with the director and scriptwriter.

In 2016, he played one of the lead role in the movie “Hotel Salvation” (Mukti Bhawan).
