Chandru Atma(17 September 1938 – 12 April 2009) was an Indian playback singer. He was born to a distinguished lawyer-Hashmatrai Chainani in Karachi (now in Pakistan). He had two siblings namely C.H. Atma- the well-known Bollywood singer and his younger brother Indra atmu. Chandru’s father was passionate about music and that passion seemed to have trickled down to his children. His elder sibling C.H. Atma influenced and guided him throughout his musical journey. Chandru started by joining his brother in Bombay who had already made a name for himself and was even present at his live shows. Through his brother’s connections, he also got to interact with other popular artists as well.
This exposure led to him gravitating toward music as well. Recognizing his talent and will, C.H. Atma, who Chandru also refers to as his guru, began tutoring him in music. Chandru first started getting hands-on experience by singing in private mehfils. He got his first opportunity to sing on stage when his brother got ill and he was asked to take over the performance. Owing to the show being a success, Chandru finally started making a name for himself and found himself in midst of more opportunities. In the course of his success, HMV followed by T-Series made several private albums with him. He is known for his work in films like Lakhpati(1991), Maar Dhaad(1988), Prem Bandhan(1979), and Bhumika(1977). He has also made several devotional songs for recording companies such as T-Series. He also appeared on-screen in the film Prem Bandhan(1979).
