Advaita Kala is an Indian author, screenwriter, and columnist. She has written plays for many films such as the love drama Anjaana Anjaani Click to look into! >> Read More... (2010) and the thrilling drama Kahaani (2012). In addition to film writing, Kala has also written two novels: Almost Single (2007) and Almost There! (2013). Kala's younger sister is an advocate for the London School of Economics and her father has been retired as a secretary for the Government of India. She was brought up in Delhi. She says that "The rapid way in which the concepts of love and courtship are evolving and continue to do so. Also, the fact that the ‘hunt’ was not necessarily the fiefdom of the male of the species"Almost Single" was a bestseller and called "Bridget Jones in a saree" by the UK Independent.
Director Siddharth Anand had approached Kala to develop the story of two suicidal strangers who fall in love into a feature-length script. Although at first, she was skeptical as she had never written a screenplay before, she accepted the request. Impressed by the origin of the story, Kala began drawing characters for a few days and began writing, which she found very different from writing novels. Anand helped her to understand the process of writing screenplays. Kala wrote the first story, approached it as a writing book, and sent it as chapters to Anand, saying: "Screenplay writing can be a lonely process like writing a novel, but on the road when others are involved, it becomes easy and fun writing.
Sujoy Ghosh went to Kala with the idea of Kahaani(a movie), starring Vidya Balan. Kala took inspiration from her experience in Kolkata. She reported that despite the language barrier and the chaos and poverty of the big city, She was attracted to the warmth of the people, which was evident in the film. Kala began writing in 2009 and completed a 185-page in February 2010. Her research included reading the books Open Secrets: India's Intelligence Unveiled by Maloy Krishna Dhar and India's External Intelligence: Secrets of Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) by V. K. Singh. With a budget of ₹ 80 million (the US $1.0 million), Kahaani made more than 1.04 billion (US $14 million) worldwide after a 50-day theatrical run. The film has been a huge success and has won numerous awards and nominations.
Kala has won the “Screen Award” for Best Story, “Star Guilds Award” for Best Story, and “Zee Cine Award” for Best Story and Ghosh. In addition to writing films and novels, Kala also wrote a serial “Airplane” which was aired on Star Plus. She writes a regular Hospitality column for Financial Express called Epicuriosity and has a column in the Financial Chronicle and on Yahoo as well as in Dainik Jagran(Hindi).
She also writes a regular column for the Dhaka Tribune.
