Hindi Music Director Alokananda Dasgupta

Alokananda Dasgupta is a Mumbai-based Indian classical pianist  and music composer,  who is  recognized for her work in Hindi, Marathi and Bengali cinema. She was born in Kolkata, India to a famous poet and movie-maker, Buddhadeb Dasgupta.

She started learning piano at the age of 5 and completed her graduation with honours in English Literature from St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata. She also completed her Master's in English Literature from the University of Calcutta.

She studied film studies for two years and then went to Toronto, where she completed  Bachelor of Music with honours in Music Performance and Music Composition from York University. Alokananda has also been selected under the Composer and Sound Studio category of Berlin Talent Campus.

While she was completing her Master’s, she decided to pursue her lifelong passion at York University. Since she was a classically trained Pianist and Piano teacher as well, she was naturally attracted towards music composition for films.

After completing her degree, she became the music assistant of Amit Trivedi Amit Rivedi is a phenomenal musician of the Bollyw >> Read More... and regarded him as her Mentor. She also learned to programme in her composer's class and even worked with and under the guidance of foreign composers, Ellan and Jonathan.

She assisted Amit Trivedi for various films like Vikramaditya Motwane's Udaan and another movie Aisha, which was released in 2010. She debuted as a music composer with the Marathi film, Shala, a romantic- drama released in 2011.It was followed by another release in 2013, B.A. Pass, a Hindi neo-noir that was critically acclaimed. Another romantic drama that she worked on released in the same year, Fandry.

Alokananda has also assisted her father in writing few of his films, composing the soundtrack for Woh, which is a feature film based on Rabindra Nath Tagore's novel Shey. Likewise, her such other works include Anwar Ka Ajab Kissa, Treyodoshi and Tope (The Bait).

After producing some excellent music these movies, she worked in Asha Jaoar Majhe (Labour of Love), an award-winning Bengali Silent film that released in 2014. She has also received Prabhat Puraskar and the Sanskriti Kala Darshan award for the best background score in 2012 and 2014 respectively.

More of her works include Geelee and Sniffer, the releases of 2013. Half Widow, a drama based on the lives of Kashmiri women and Flying Colours of 2016. Two of her latest films include Trapped that released on 17 March, 2017 and Aaba, a drama set in the remote village of Arunachal Pradesh.

Apart from composing music for these well-known films, Alokananda has also worked in various Ad films, short films, and documentaries. Some of her other works are Amdavad Ma Famous, a Gujarati documentary; iPhone6; Pepsi and Kurkure and The Affair.
