Her daughter essayed the same role in the remake of the film later in 2006. In Umrao Jaan, she wanted to play the role of Umrao’s mother but upon Muzaffar Ali’s wife back then, Subhashini, she agreed to portray Khannum Jaan and was thankful that she listened to that one piece of advice. She has also acted in landmark and renowned films like Heer Raanjha, Fasla and Bazaar, which is about young girls who are sold off to sheikhs for the purpose of marriage. She has appeared in a lot of films with her daughter, like, Lorie, in which Shabana Azmi plays the protagonist, who lost her first child and was unable to bear another.

They also acted together in Muzaffar Ali’s Anjuman, which is about a self-help group of women who become entrepreneurs to support themselves. This movie is very close to her heart and remains one of her favourites. She authored a biography, Kaifi & I, which has also been performed as a play by the name of Kaifi Aur Main. Apart from this, she is a member of the Indian People’s Theatre Association and Communist Party of India.
