There have been quite a few well known actors, and especially actresses from the South, who have been
mainstays of the Hindi movies industry – the names of Vyjanthimala, Hema MaliniHema Malini is perhaps the only dream girl of the >> Read More... and Rekha
immediately come to my mind. In fact, the cosmopolitan nature of the Hindi movie industry is almost
taken for granted, giving it a pan India image, in any case. More recently there has also been a slightly
reverse trend where actresses from the North have first established themselves in films of the South,
before coming over to the North for movies or TV serials.
One such case is that of Sameeksha Singh, who prefers to use her first name only for her film and TV
credits. Her interesting career starts from Chandigarh, having been born in a typically Punjabi family,
and showing no signs of any filmy trends in her younger years. In fact, quite away from the world of
films, she had completed her electronics engineering before even contemplating a screen career.
Strangely, she started her career in the Telegu movie “143” and then
jumped further south to Tamil films, with “Arinthum Ariyamalum”, in
which she not only bagged the award for the best debut actress, but the
film itself became quite popular. Journeying though her South Indian film
foray, she went on to act in about than 15 more Telegu and Tamil movies,
before finding a place in her native Punjabi filmdom. On the way, she also
did a bit role in an inconsequential Hindi movie called “Mr Hot Mr Kool”.
More than her chequered career in films, she ultimately got better
recognition on the small screen, where she started off with Sahara TV in the serial “Zara” in 2006, while
she was still entrenched in the South. She went on to acquire more prominence through her TV roles,
which she did for all the major channels. In most of these she played the leading lady. On the sidelines
she went on to feature in quite a few TV and print commercials for well known products, making her
quite a well known face in the ad media too. Currently she is more engaged in TV serials and the ad
world.
