Shashank Khaitan is an Indian movie director. He has served as a director in the Bollywood Hindi-language film industry.
He is very well-known for his direction and writing in the 2014 flick “
Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania”, which starred ‘
Alia Bhatt’ and ‘
Varun Dhawan’ in the lead roles. The movie was produced by Dharma Productions under ‘
Shashank belonged to a Marwari family who was into business. Born in Kolkata he was brought up in Maharashtra. He was very interested in seeing films, but his major interest was in sports. He loved playing tennis and cricket tournaments. When he was 17, he made a mind of making a move towards his desire and opted for a profession in the Bollywood Film Industry.
He initially took admission into Whistling Woods International Institute. The Institute is formed by famous Indian Film Director ‘
Subhash Ghai’. This served a very scope of entering into the industry and making contacts. He always mentions about the good teaching that enhanced his talent of technical knowledge and still remembers his teachers who have always supported him and encouraged to do better in life and his work. As a student, he has worked in the film Sherwani Kahaan Hai, along with his co-students, at the Institute. But, due to his bad luck or some reasons the movie could not be completed.
In 2008, he featured in Roorkee By-Pass, short drama as Manohar. ‘Arundhati Sen Verma’ has provided direction for the short movie. He even assisted Subhash Ghai on the sets of the movie Black & White.
In 2014, he directed Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania. His initial plan for Humpty was to film it with a story that was quite similar to the 2005 film “
Bunty Aur Babli” which starred ‘
Abhishek Bachchan’ and ‘
Rani Mukerji’ in the leads with ‘
Amitabh Bachchan’ playing the supporting role. But, as he began working on the script, he noticed the characters are very sweet and a love story fighting to prove their love would be a better idea. Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania indicates an inspiration from the American romantic “Casablanca” and the 1995 Superhit film “
Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge”. The film pays tribute to Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and “
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai”.
After working on the script, along with the name Humpty Sharma Di
Love Story, he forwarded it to the Dharma Productions owned by Karan Johar. Karan read the script and loved it, and made a decision of Dharma Productions making the movie but there were no thoughts of Khaitan directing the flick. Shashank made some changes in script and Karan made a decision that Shashank must direct the movie. The name of the movie was changed and renamed as Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania from Humpty Sharma Di Love Story. Khaitan chose Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan for the film after seeing their outstanding performance and chemistry in the movie “Student of the Year”. The movie released in 2014 and was a huge hit at the theaters.
In 2016, there was an announcement made that Khaitan will be writing and directing another ROM-COM “
Badrinath Ki Dulhania” under the banner of Dharma Productions. The movie will again cast the same Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt in the leads. Though the plot and the story of the movie are different there is a buzz that it will be the second franchise or sequel to Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania. The first schedule of the movie is completed and the second schedule will soon begin and will be shot in Uttar Pradesh and is slated to release by 2017.
