Rahul Dasgupta was an Indian filmmaker, writer, director as well as teacher. He worked in various fields, such as radio, television, theatre, and film. His date of birth is January 14, 1943. His birthplace is India's West Bengal. His younger brother Ashoke Dasgupta is a writer. Uday Chandra is an actor who is like a brother to him from FTII and is one of his closest friends. He was chosen for a film director course in 1971, which he completed in 1974. The movie Garm Hava was produced at this time and premiered at FTII.

Rahul Dasgupta was inspired to create films on these subjects by the changes that were occurring in Indian politics and culture at that time. In addition to his skill as a filmmaker and his well-built relationship with well-known modern Bengali director Satyajit Ray, his films emphasized or focused on social commentary and the portrayal of social realities. Satyajit Ray had interviewed him for FTII, and Satyajit Ray had also been his lifelong guide. He wrote the screenplay for the movie he planned to make about Satyajit Ray. He got his degree in film direction from Pune, India's Film and Television Institute of India (FTII).

In addition to all of this, he also produced a lot of commercials and documentaries. Rahul Dasgupta created Over a hundred advertisements. He was employed by the advertising agency O&M. He also produced documentaries for National Geographic Channel and Discovery. Among the many glories his film Genesis received was a National Award. "Genesis" is a 28-minute film that was shot in 35mm black and white in 1974. In this film, Shaji N. Karun took care of the camera. The movie print was misplaced but later found. Despite being severely damaged, it has subsequently been repaired and screened at FTII in Rahul Dasgupta's last year of filming Freedom.

The film's cinematographer was Trilok M Kamdar. Rahul Dasgupta not only directed films but also performed in a couple of them at FTII. He used to perform in plays as well. He wrote and shared his experiences with cinema students during his final days at the FTII. He passed away in Pune, Maharashtra, India, on November 19, 2012, at 69.
