Raj Kumar Gupta was born in 1976 in Hazaribagh, Jharkhand. His current residence is in Mumbai, India. He had done his schooling from St.Xavier’s School, Jharkhand and DPS, Delhi. He completed his graduation from Ramjas College, Delhi University. He has played different roles in the industry since his debut in 2003. He has been a director, a writer, a screenplay writer, etc. over the years.

He debuted in the industry with ‘Aamir’ which was not only a commercial hit at the box office but was critically appreciated; the audience and the critics loved the guerilla style in which the movie shooting took place on the Mumbai streets. The project was low budgeted but still the ‘hold onto the seat’ thriller secured its position in the selection at the year’s award ceremonies for the category of Best Debut Director.

In 2011, Raj Kumar wrote and directed “No One Killed Jessica” with Vidya Balan and Rani Mukerji in the lead roles, about the true incidents that happened around the murder of Jessica Lal and its brutal trial that took place in the court. The movie received a positive response from the media and the public and did a successful business at the box office. The movie received four nominations for Best Film, Best Actress, etc. at the 57th Filmfare Awards. Rani Mukerji bagged the Best Supporting Actress Award for her outstanding performance in the movie.

Raj Kumar directed an uncertain comedy picture, ‘Ghanchakkar’ in 2013. The movie had Emraan Hashmi and Vidya Balan in the lead roles and received a negative response at the box office. In the movie, Emraan Hashmi is approached to carry out a robbery by two of his friends and they claim that this would solve their money problem for the rest of their lives. The robbery takes place and Sanjay ( a character played by Emraan) successfully finishes his job and hides the money. When both his friends return for their share they find that Sanjay has lost his memory and has no clue about the whereabouts of the briefcase that had the money. With all the confusion going around in the background Sanjay discovers that he had left the briefcase at his mom’s place. The critics were unhappy, and the movie could not make it big. The plot was not concrete and was not able to hold the audience onto their seats.

The upcoming projects of Raj Kumar include “Section 84” which has Kareena Kapoor Khan in the lead playing the role of a schizophrenic call girl and slated for a 2016 release, and is produced by Eros International Pvt Ltd.
