Manmohan Mahapatra was an Odia filmmaker, producer, director, and writer who was born on November 10, 1951. Mahapatra studied filmmaking at the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune, and in 1975, he released his debut short film, "Anti-Memoirs." In 1976, he directed his first full-fledged Odia film, "Seeta Raati," which won him the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Odia. It was presented at an international film festival for the first time in 1982, making it the first Odia film to do so.

Mahapatra has also received India's highest honor, the Padma Shri 2020, for his contributions to the arts.

Mahapatra's surrealistic touch is unmistakable in all of his films. His geniusness is defined by his ambition to draw a line outside the bounds, contrasting with traditional films centered on fictitious utopian concepts. He has drawn inspiration from his encounters with the realities of life. He has established himself as one of India's top filmmakers, receiving international praise for his eight feature films, which are known for their outstanding originality in both style and substance and are marked by technical perfection and creative beauty. He has been named as “Father of Odia new wave Cinema”.

Mahapatra died on January 13, 2020, at the age of 68, in a private hospital in Bhubaneswar after a long battle with kidney and heart disease.

Manmohan was born in Khordha, Odisha, India. He was an Odia filmmaker, writer, producer, and director. Mahapatra gained knowledge about his profession and talent at FTII, Pune. Manmohan’s work has given him a lot of awards to fill his cabinet. He worked around human emotions, feelings, sentiments. Manmohan Mahapatra has won eight national awards in a row. His first-ever movie, Seeta Raati in1976, won him the national award for the Best Feature Film in Odia and later was showcased on the big stage at the international film festival in 1982.

Manmohan had also directed a Hindi movie, Bits and Pieces, featuring Diya Mirza, Rahul Bose, and Nandita Das. Manmohan Mahapatra has produced Forbidden Dream and Neerab Jhada. He has written Bhinna Samaya, Majhi Pahacaha, and Tired Afternoon. As a director, he has directed various feature films and documentaries like, Voices of Silence, Konark Temple: The Sun Temple, Agni Veena, and Muhurta. His work speaks for him. Sadly, Manmohan Mahapatra left the world while battling kidney and heart elements. He died at the age of 69. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2020.
