Mahesh Dattani is an Indian Director, writer, actor, and playwright. He was born in the metro city of Bangalore, India on August 7, 1958. He is a Sahitya Akademi Award recipient and the first English playwright to be honored with the award. He wrote famous plays like Dance like a Man, On a Muggy Night in Mumbai, Final Solutions, Fought the Queen, Thirty Days in September, Tara, The Murder that never was and The Big Fat City. Dattani gained his high school education from Baldwin Boys High School. He then went to St. Joseph’s College in Bangalore, for his higher education, where he graduated in Political Science, History and Economics. He then did his post-graduation in Marketing and Advertising Management. Madhu Rye’s play Kumari Agashi also made the artist gain interest in writing.

He began his career in an advertising company as a copywriter. He wrote ‘Where There’s a Will,’ his first full-length piece in 1986. Since 1995, Mahesh has been a full-time theatre director. He debuted as a Director with the movie Mango Shuffle. A film called Morning Raaga is written and directed by Dattani. Ek Alag Mausam was also one of his direction projects. His works have garnered him multitudes of awards and appreciations. The National Panorama awarded Dance Like a man in the Best Picture in English category, in 1998. Final Solutions and Other Plays, his book of plays, was honored with Sahitya Academy Award. In addition to them, Final Solutions, Tara and 30 Days in September were the best productions of the year by Sahitya Kala Parishad. His other famous plays include, ‘Where did I leave my Purdah,’ ‘Seven Circles around Fire,’ ‘Brief Candle’ and many more.
