Barnali completed her graduation from Miranda House, Delhi University, 1990-1993, in Botany, and was the Debate team Editor of Magazine in the Department Biological Sciences. She did her masters from Delhi University, 1993-1995, in Plant Molecular Biology, where she was an active nature enthusiast and a member of the Creative-writing Team and the Debate Team. She was the university topper for both the courses. Traveling and Mountain Climbing are a few of her interests. With a full professional proficiency in English, professional working proficiency in Hindi and native or bilingual proficiency in Bengali, her road to success started off with no hurdles. Although she began as a cell-biologist specializing in plant tissue culture, she soon turned towards the film industry.
