Shukla Barnali Ray is a writer and filmmaker, living in Mumbai, India. She is married to
, a distinguished filmmaker in Bollywood. Barnali completed her graduation from Miranda House, Delhi University, 1990-1993, in Botany, and was the Debate team Editor of Magazine in the Department Biological Sciences. She did her masters from Delhi University, 1993-1995, in Plant Molecular Biology, where she was an active nature enthusiast and a member of the Creative-writing Team and the Debate Team. She was the university topper for both the courses. Traveling and Mountain Climbing are a few of her interests. With a full professional proficiency in English, professional working proficiency in Hindi and native or bilingual proficiency in Bengali, her road to success started off with no hurdles. Although she began as a cell-biologist specializing in plant tissue culture, she soon turned towards the film industry. She has been a freelance writer/director, in Mumbai since 1997 and was the writer/director for Sunshine Pictures from August 2009 to May 2011. She was the assistant director of ‘

. Besides story and scriptwriting, she writes poetry which the website 'Kitaab' published in 2014. The Big-bridge webzine printed her poem 'Palash and the Padmini' in August 2015. She has read her work for PEN India Events at the Prithvi Theatre and has been part of the 100 Thousand Poets for Change. Teksto.com, an online literary journal published her poems in November 2016. Her first short story 'Suzanna Roger' has been published online. Her scripts had been listed for the Sundance Film Festival- The Script Lab in 2013 and 2014 and she will be making one of her scripts into a Bengali feature film in 2017. Her first documentary film ‘Liquid Borders’ has been completed with the Films Division and the shooting of her next documentary film is ‘
’. She has been invited to film festivals across North America, Italy, and all across India in Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chandigarh, Trivandrum, and Kochi. Apart from being a great scriptwriter, she supports and volunteers for causes like economic empowerment and human rights. In an interview, she said that she would like to encourage atleast a few people to come into writing. Barnali Ray Shukla is a splendid film maker and an extraordinary human being.
