She learned traditional Egyptian belly dancing when she stayed in Middle Asia for 17 years.

She mixes Egyptian belly dancing with Bollywood moves and songs and turned a new style that got her many fans in India within a short time. In an interview, she told that she came to India to study Fashion designing in NIFT but dropped out in 3 months of being there because she did not like the experience. She entered the profession of dancing, which was not planned at all by her. When she was a salsa student at Salsa India, the institute needed a belly dance instructor.

After seeing her performance in belly dancing, the institute hired her as belly dance instructor. After one year, she established her dance academy named Banjara School of Dance in Delhi. It is named after a Banjara community of Rajasthan which is said to have belly dancing roots. The ultimate motto of Banjara is “to express not to impress”.

She says that it is to give life through dance to change the opinions that people might have about art and artists. She wants to expand the academy into all metro cities of India in future. She even choreographed actress Rani Mukherjee in the ‘Aga Bai song from the film Aiyyaa. After that, she got some choreography offers from the south. She was even offered item songs in Tollywood and Bollywood and also a small role in iconic film Bhaag Milkha Baag. But she declined all offers.

Recently Meher Malik along with her Banjara group of students performed in Starplus Dance plus show of choreographer- director Remo D’ Souza. In 2016 February Meher Malik and her group of students preparing themselves for one-month exchange programme in Portugal One can say that she is main responsible for increasing of the craze of belly dancing in India. At present, she is the foremost exponent of traditional Egyptian belly dancing in India.
