Son of army personnel, he moved from one place to another in childhood but lives in New Delhi presently. Singh completed an undergraduate degree in history from St. Stephen's College, New Delhi, followed by a post-graduate diploma in Marketing Management. He worked as an economic journalist for The Economic Times, then became the Resident Editor of The Times of India, New Delhi. Vikas Singh also has a fruitful literary career, debuting with the book The Know of Things, co-written with Derek O'Brien, Jug Suraiya, and Bunny Suraiya in 2003.
His book, The Big Fix, was published in 2013 as a fictional mystery thriller about the inner world of cricket as a sport and industry. In 2015, Singh released the book Bhima: Man in the Shadows, told from the perspective of Bhima, second of the Pandavas. He is also working on another book, Another Time Another Place, with Love and Other Terrors as its working title. The book is a romance and thriller that explores Yogi Mehta, a character referenced in The Big Fix, and Mitakshara, the protagonist of the same book. Singh also has a blog, Rue-Barb Pie, where he writes about cricket and economics, his topics of interest. He lives in Delhi with his wife and daughter.
