Shyamoli Varma

Shyamoli Varma is Bengali, Punjabi, born on 11th December 1953 in Pune, India. She is from a family of 11, her father, a retired colonel in the Indian army, her mother is a housewife. She speaks English, Hindi, and French fluently. Shyamoli has one brother who was a financial advisor in Melbourne. She went to Sophia College for Women, there, she studied educational psychology.Varma is married to Abhijit Chaterji, and they have a daughter, Akiksha, who is a graduate and a Master’s degree holder from the University of Washington in Seattle. After college, Varma took a job as a telephone operator in Pune before she was signed to a three-year modeling contract with Lakmé Cosmetics.

Through the recommendation of Jeannie Naoroji, an assistant to the fashion choreographer. Varma is India's first supermodel and the first Lakmé girl. She faced some challenges in the early stage of her work as a model she has to advertise make-up products to an India that knew little or nothing. Even in the cosmetic industry, Lakmé had to struggle with negative criticisms about their cosmetics in India and they cosmetic company had to market their products to other countries.

A year later into her work she got an endorsement deal with NESCAFÉ and Doordarshan. Shyamoli did all of their products advertisements before she was signed by Pierre Cardin in 1980 then she had to relocate to Paris, where she worked closely with Anjali Mendes, a fellow model who is also from India. A photographer, Rohit Khosla and Azzedine Alai who is from Tunisia. After so many years of working in Paris, in 1989 she came back to Pune and started a career as a fashion choreographer, she toured all over India, including France and Germany, over the next five years for her job until her daughter was born.
