Mustafa Monwar is a well-known Bangladeshi artist, painter, sculptor, actor, writer, and screenwriter. He was born on 1 September 1935 in Jessore, Bengal Presidency, British India, and is the son of Golam Mostafa, a famous Bengali writer, and poet. He completed his early education at Narayanganj Government High School. Later, he has admitted to the Scottish Church College of the University of Calcutta, from where he transferred to the Government College of Art and Craft. After his graduation, Mustafa began his career as a lecturer at the East Pakistan College of Arts and Crafts. He joined Bangladesh Television as director general and became the Director General of the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy and National Media Institute. Mustafa Monwar has also worked as Managing Director of FDC. In the 1970s, during Bangladesh's liberation war, he organizes puppet shows at refugee camps.
He is popularly known as the Puppet Man of Bangladesh. Some of the most famous puppet shows by Mustafa Monwar are Agachha, Rakkhash, and A Brave Farmer. His puppet show, Moner Kotha, ran on Bangladesh television for 12 years. Mustafa runs an organization, Educational Puppet Development Centre, in Dhaka. Mustafa married Merry Monwar in 1965, and they had two children, daughter Nandini Monwar and son Sadat Monwar. He is the representative of the Denmark-based International Puppet Development Centre from Bangladesh. Popular teleplays by Mustafa Monwar are Raktokorobi by Rabindranath Tagore and The Taming of the Shrew by Shakespeare.
Some popular TV series of Monwar are Chabial Reunion (2017), Dhaka Metro (2019), Ekattor (2020), Ladies and Gentleman (2021), Unoloukik (2021), and Jaago Bahey (2021). He acted in the drama history war movie 'Guerrilla' in 2011, Live From Dhaka in 2016, Iti Tomari Dhaka in 2018, Made in Bangladesh in 2019, and No Ground Beneath The Feet in 2021.
