Upendra Kishore Ray Chowdhury was an Indian writer, illustrator, musician, and philosopher who was born on May 12, 1863, in Mymensingh, then part of British India and now part of Bangladesh. He developed a strong interest in music, literature, and philosophy. He enjoyed music and learned to play a variety of instruments, including the esraj, harmonium, and flute. He also enjoyed writing and illustrating children's stories, and his works include the well-known Bengali book "Tuntunir Boi" (The Adventures of Tuntuni), which is still widely read by children in Bengal. He was also passionate about philosophy and believed in the power of education. He worked tirelessly in his community to promote literacy and learning.

Printing and publishing were one of Upendrakishore's most significant contributions. In 1895, he founded the U. Ray and Sons printing press, which used modern technology to print books and other materials. He used the press to publish both his works and those of other writers and intellectuals of the time. In 1913, he also founded the children's magazine "Sandesh," which became very popular and is still published today. Upendrakishore Ray Chowdhury died at the age of 52 on December 20, 1915. His legacy, however, was carried on by his family, who went on to make significant contributions in a variety of fields. Satyajit Ray, his son, became one of the world's most renowned filmmakers, winning numerous awards, including an Academy Award for Lifetime Achievement.

Sandip Ray, his grandson, is a well-known writer and publisher who has carried on the family tradition of publishing and promoting Bengali literature. In addition to his role as a writer and illustrator, Upendra Kishore Ray Chowdhury was skilled in playing the esraj, a traditional stringed instrument from Bengal. Furthermore, he was affiliated with the well-known music organization, "Bharat Sangeet Samaj" in Kolkata.
