Badal Roy was a well-known tabla player and percussionist. He was well known for his fusion of Indian rhythms with jazz. He was born as Amarendra Roy Chowdhury on 16th October, 1939, in Comilla, British India (Present day Bangladesh). His father was a government official, whereas his mother was a housewife. He was given the name Badal in his childhood by his grandfather. Roy holds a Master’s degree in Statistics. He was introduced to music by his uncle and trained under his teacher, Alla Rakha. He was greatly inspired by American jazz artists such as Elvis Presly, Pat Boone, and Nat King Cole. He was seasoned in playing multiple instruments in addition to Tabla such as, shakers, bells and flexatone. Roy was married to Geeta Vashi. The couple lived in Wilmington, Delaware. They had a son named Amitav Roy Chowdhury. Roy died due to COVID at an age of 82 in Wilmington.
