Renuka Ray was a well-known Indian politician, social activist, and independence fighter who lived from 1904 to 1997. She was a Brahmo reformer's descendent and the daughter of Charulata Mukherjee, a social worker, and All India Women's Conference member, and Satish Chandra Mukherjee, an ICS official. The Indian government presented her with the Padma Bhushan in 1988. At the young age of sixteen, she met Mahatma Gandhi and was immensely affected by him. In response to Gandhiji's appeal for a boycott of the British Indian educational system, she dropped out of college. She enrolled in the London School of Economics in 1921, meanwhile, after Gandhiji had been convinced by her parents to invite her to travel to London for more study. Satyendra Nath Ray was her husband at the time. a young age. The most illustrious couple of their period were her maternal grandparents.
In addition to being a member of the Indian Education Service and the first Indian Principal of the esteemed Presidency College, Calcutta, my maternal grandfather Prof. P K Roy was the first Indian to get a D Phil from Oxford University. Grandmother Sarala Roy, a well-known social worker who advocated for women's independence, was my mother's paternal grandmother. She was the first Indian woman to serve in the Senate and the founder of Gokhale Memorial School and College at Calcutta University. Sarala Roy was the sister of Lady Abala Bose, the founder of the esteemed Doon School, and S. R. Das. She was also a distant relative of Deshbandhu C.R Das. Upon her return to India, she joined the All India Women's Conference and put a lot of effort into promoting women's rights and parental property inheritance rights. She was elected president of the All India Women's Conference in 1932.
She also served as its president from 1953 to 1954. She was appointed as a representative of Indian women to the Central Legislative Assembly in 1943. From 1946–1947, she served as a member of the Indian Constituent Assembly. She served as West Bengal's Minister of Relief and Rehabilitation from 1952 to 1957. From the Malda Lok Sabha seat, she also served as a Lok Sabha member from 1957 to 1967. The Renuka Ray Committee, also known as the Social Welfare and Welfare of Backward Classes Committee, was led by her in 1959. She has siblings, As the first air chief marshal of the Indian Air Force, Subroto Mukherjee passed away in Tokyo.
He was married to Sharda Mukherjee (née Pandit), a niece-in-law of Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit and Prashanta Mukherjee, who served as the chairman of the Indian Railway Board, and was wed to Violet, the granddaughter of Keshab Chandra Sen.
