He is the grandson of producer G.Rakesh and the brother of the well known Siddharth and Aditya Roy Kapur.

He completed his schooling from G.D.Somani Memorial School in Cuffe Parade, Mumbai. The name of “Roy” was given by his paternal grandparents, who had a store under the name of “Roy Brothers” when they used to reside at Lahore. Ever since the age of 13, Kunaal was an active participant of children’s theater plays.
