The year 1954 on October 10th first witnessed this award festival which was then called as the State Awards for Films. The intent behind introducing these awards was the appreciate and The 30th National Film Awards took place in the year 1983 in the honour of Best of Indian Cinema of the previous year (1982).
The president of the country gives the national awards to the winners every year. The venue of the award function was New Delhi, the capital of the country.The awards were of three categories, Feature Films, Books on Indian Cinema, and Short Films. Three committees were formed to announce the winners of the three categories of awards and every committee of jury members had a head. The Government of India had introduced this award for the first time in the year 1968 which was the 16th National Film Award Ceremony.

The Regional Award for Best Feature Film Hindi was given to the film Katha. Vimala Swaminathan’s film, Kal Aur Aaj won the Non-feature Award for Best Film on Family Welfare.The jury introduced a new award in this award ceremony which is Best Film on Family Welfare under the Non-feature Film Award category. Considering where the award ceremony started in the year 1954 with the name of State Awards, the National Film Awards has come a long and massive way giving unfathomable appreciation along with national recognition to the Best of Indian cinema of diversified genres, languages, dialects, and medium (both audio-visual and print media).
