Gautam Chattopadhyay is an Indian songwriter who worked for the Bengali film industry. He was born on 1st June 1949 and was a multi-talented singer, songwriter, bassist, and composer. Gautam was the founder of the rock band Moheener Ghoraguli, whose other members include Tapas Das, Abraham Mazumdar, Pradip Chatterjee, Ranjon Ghoshal, Biswanath Bishu Chattopadhyay, and Tapesh Bandopadhyay in 1975. During his college days, he played many Indian and Western instruments, like in his college years he played guitar in a band called The Urge.

He with his brothers and cousin brothers formed a band named The Saptarshi and later they changed the name to Moheener Ghoraguli. As a music director he worked in Kichhhu Sanlap Kichhu Pralap in 1999, Nagmoti in 1983, Bhalobasa O Andhakar in 1982, Shomoy, and Rongbin. Gautam Chattopadhyay is a singer, songwriter, composer, and bassist who has worked in the Bengali Film Industry. He is best known for founding the progressive rock band Moheener Ghoraguli in 1975, with Pianist Abraham Mazumdar, Songwriter Tapas Das, Guitarist Tapesh Bandopadhyay, Bassist Pradip Chatterjee, Drummer Biswanath Bishu Chattopadhyay, and Lyricist Ranjon Ghoshal. He completed his graduation at the prestigious Presidency University in Kolkata. During his college days, he played many Indian and Western instruments. He also played the role of a lead guitarist in a band called The Urge. The band primarily performed at Park Street in Kolkata during the 1960s. Apart from music, Gautam Chattopadhyay was also involved in politics during college. He participated in the political movement known as Naxal Movement, which occurred in the late 60s and early 70s. After completing college, he went to Jabalpur to work as a Medical representative and then to Bhopal.

While working as a Medical representative, he continued composing music. He returned to Kolkata as he was disinterested in his work and wanted to emerge as a musician. He formed a band with his brothers and cousins called Saptarshi but later he changed their name to Moheener Ghoraraguli. They created a new form of music called 'baul-jazz.' The band released many albums, such as Khepar gaan (1998), Maya (1997), Abar bachhor kuri pore (1995), and many more. He continued his work as a solo artist. He composed songs for his films and worked as a film director for other filmmakers. He directed featured films such as Nagmoti and Somoy. Nagmoti won the President's Medal at the National Film Awards in 1983.

During the mid-90s, Gautam Chattopadhyay had been invited to Kabri-Anglong. He went there to work with the Kabri people and preserve their folk music which was influenced by film music. He also taught young people to sing songs and to read notions. He also thought of doing an opera with the Kabri people. He did an opera called Haimu on their folklore. 300 Kabri youth participated in the opera, which was a massive success. Gautam Chattopadhyay died on 20 June 1999 in Kolkata, India.
