If only we could be bestowed with the knowledge of being a reincarnated Norse God particularly the reincarnation of Odin on our 21 st birthday would we be as lucky as The Almighty Johnsons. For an adult at the age of 21, Axl Johnson is burdened with the massive responsibility of assuring the family's endurance by detecting the rebirth of Odin's wife, Frigg so as to help his family get back full control over their godly powers. Essentially, he can either unite the gods and restore them to their lost glory, or, if he fails to achieve his destiny, lead them to all of their deaths. If this wasn’t cumbersome enough, Axl’s task is thwarted by three Norse goddesses. These goddesses currently rank higher than the Johnson’s and would remain so only if the Johnson’s power isn’t restored.
The Almighty Johnsons is a New Zealand based fantasy series with equal parts comedy and drama television series. It is designed by James Griffin and Rachel Lang and is presented by South Pacific Pictures. NZ on Air supported funding for the first sequence in Dec 2009. The first season consisted of 10 episodes aired from a period of February to April. It received good Nielsen ratings with an average rating of 9.8. It also holds the title of having a "100% fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes with critics giving 8 out of 10 points and overall positive reaction from the audience standing in at 88 %.
Series one premiered in Australia on Network Ten and on Sci Fi Channel, in Canada on SPACE and in the United Kingdom on Syfy. Though with such a show – one having a supernatural theme you would expect a lot of special effects displaying fantasy settings, the premiere episode has something altogether different to offer to you. It starts off with Mike convincing Axl by playing rock-paper-scissors. Mike is Axl’s big brother and with his powers ensured that he always wins the game.
This turns Axl’s disbelief about such powers into excitement and trust. Series one ends with quite a bang. Though Axl must marry Eva, he believes he is in love with his flatmate Gaia. Eva too has secrets up her sleeve as she turns out to be the goddess Hel, goddess of the dead and the underworld. Axl on his part cannot back out of the engagement as the contract is signed by blood and will result in Mike’s death. To free Axl from this obligation, Ty marries Eva. Gaia leaves as she believes Axl had simply used her and Mike ends his marriage with Val because she is pregnant with Rob’s child.
