Incarcerated Army doctor John Watson is acquainted with the cryptic detective, Sherlock Holmes, London’s one and only consulting detective, just as the police requires him to fathom a series of apparently inconceivable suicides due to a poison pill. In the course of time, Sherlock solves the mystery and reveals the murderer, a cab driver named Jeff, who is dying due to an incurable disease.

However, Jeff somehow manages to convince Sherlock to have a go at a treacherous game of luck. Nevertheless, before the chase is over, Watson arrives just in time to shoot Jeff dead. The pilot episode is a remarkable, slick and modernized version of the original story, A Study in Scarlet, acquainting us with the primary characters of the series while keeping the episode running at a crisp pace, with a unique narration format. The original story was cleverly woven into the background of the 21st century, but without being handicapped by it. It has been rewritten and condensed into a thrilling and convincing tale by the show runners, Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss. The pair of Holmes and Watson manages to hold their own personalities as separate characters as well as displaying a strong chemistry when solving the mystery as a pair.

Sherlock is contacted by an old associate to investigate a mysterious break-in and sprayed graffiti at a bank. He stipulates that the graffiti is a code meant for a specific bank trader, who is found dead in his flat later in the day. The next day, a journalist is found murdered in his flat, along with the same cipher. Holmes soon unravels a gang running a racket of smuggling antique artifacts from China to be sold in the West, and that either of the two murdered people had embezzled a priceless jade pin on one of their expeditions. Meanwhile, Watson is mistakenly kidnapped by the smugglers, believing him to be Sherlock, along with his date, Sarah. Holmes cracks the code at the right time to save Watson and Sarah. Even though this episode was full of action and thrill, I believe it to be slightly lacking compared to the other two episodes of the season.

On occasions, it becomes the clichéd detective drama that we don’t want to associate with this show. There are glimpses of Holmes extraordinary intelligence throughout, but they are not backed up by the overall plot. The trail of breadcrumbs which guides the smugglers to believe Watson is Holmes was a clever ploy, but seemed farfetched – certainly, a gang so adept and cunning would have known who Sherlock was? Sherlock is asked by his elder brother Mycroft to probe the inexplicable death of a Mi6 officer connected to the missing top secret military plans. However, Sherlock is preoccupied with a succession of crimes which he has to solve within a period, failing which innocuous hostages wearing bomb vests will be blown up. Holmes’ rightly deduces the mystery leading to his first one on one meeting with his series nemesis, Jim Moriarty.

The episode ends with a cliff-hanger with Sherlock pointing his gun a bomb vest kept between himself and Moriarty. The last episode of season one was a satisfying return to the polished style and substance of the opening episode, with Sherlock back in form, using his deductive skills to break down the series of cases at a breakneck speed. Benedict Cumberbatch portrays Holmes’ sociopathic habits bordering on perfection as he engages in a battle of wits with Moriarty. Bickering aside, this was a powerful climax to what has been an extraordinary retelling of the Holmes legend and makes it exciting to imagine what new mysteries await in the second season.
