This story revolves around Satyabati, who got married at the age of eight to maintain the social norms, and she was kept under strict surveillance of Brahmanical regulations. The novel tells about Satyabati's struggle to fight against family control, the mental violence of the polygamy system, and social prejudices in a patriarchal society. This novel won Rabindra Puraskar in 1965 and Jnanpith Award in 1976. The main character of the story is the handsome Ramkali Chatterjee.
It joins the two things which are the functions of priest and the quality of doctor of the traditional Ayurveda system of medicine in a Bengali village of Bengal; the five women of their extended family – Dinatarini, Kashiswari, Shankari, Shibjaya, and Mokshada are widows. It was all on them from dawn to dusk, attending to all the practical problems of running a home. They are obliged to follow strictly the rules governing widowhood, laws which they reinforced by insisting other females of the family learn to observe in a male-dominated society. The other women, just one, the young Satyabati, obey the custom, but still, her father treats her in a deviant manner. Ramkali takes her on as a student.
