Devdas is a Bengali romantic tragedy that aired on Zee Bangla in 2010. The serial is set in the 19th century and revolves around two young people Devdas and Paro. Growing up as neighbours, Devdas and Paro are best friends belonging to rich Brahmin families and have a certain soft corner for each other. As the days pass by, Devdas goes to Calcutta to pursue his studies leaving Paro behind. He does visit her whenever possible and writes letters to her describing his life in Calcutta. Over time, Paro develops strong feelings for him and wants to build a life with him. Paro's family, understanding her feelings towards the boy, decide to approach Devdas's family for the hand in marriage. But Devdas's mother, although loving towards Paro, denies the marriage stating the fact that her family has the tradition of taking dowry from the groom instead of the common traditional method. Besides, she thinks that a marriage union with the next-door neighbours would not be appropriate. Devdas's father outright refuses the marriage union concluding that Paro's family is lower-class Brahmin and Devdas is too young to marry her. Insulted, Paro's father decides to find a better and richer groom for Paro and fixes her marriage with a middle-aged, widowed, and rich zamindar.

Later when Devdas comes to visit and Paro learns of the whole ordeal, she sneaks out of the house in the middle of the night and confesses her love to Devdas. Devdas, who had been shocked to learn the truth and amazed by her bravery, tries to persuade his father but in vain. Unsure of what to do next or of his feelings for Paro he flees back to Calcutta and writes a letter to Paro informing her that it could never work out between them, considering he thought of her as a friend and nothing more. Devastated, Paro agrees to the marriage with the Zamindar, and later, when Devdas finally admits his love, she rejects him for his cowardice and the whole ordeal with the zamindar. However, Devdas vows to return to her before his death.

After this, he goes back to Calcutta and meets a woman named Chandramukhi. However, as the days pass by, he becomes alcoholic and it seems almost like a slow suicide. Chandramukhi realizes his love for Paro and loves Devdas because of his vulnerability. She suffers silently because Devdas often compares her with Paro and is rough towards her during the day, blaming her on several occasions. When he finally feels like he can't go on any longer he decides to visit Paro as he had vowed and dies on her doorstep. In the final scene, a devastated Paro tries to get out of the door to reach Devdas but is not allowed to do so.
