Reality TV talent hunt shows have always been one of the most viewed genres of TV shows all around the world. When it comes to India, a country of over 1.2 billion people is sure to have a huge amount of talent, whether it be singing, dancing, cooking, or any other form of art. There have been quite a plethora of these types of ‘Talent Hunt Shows’ but no one quite as unique as Rising Star. The show is an Indian version of the Rising Star series, an international franchise HaKokhavHaBa (which translates to The Next Star), a singing competition based in Israel and made by Keshet Broadcasting Ltd.
Rising star is a live reality television singing show which began airing on Colors TV from 4 February, nearly 5 months after Variety reported that Viacom18 had signed a deal with Keshet International, granting it the format rights to the show. The show has many big names like DiljitDosanjh, Shankar Mahadevan, Vipul D. Shah to name a few, associated with it. Produced by Keshet Broadcasting and Vipul D. Shah the show is judged by the trio ofthe famous singer, composer Shankar Mahadevan, Bengali film actress and singer Monali Thakur and the famous Punjabi singer, actor DiljitDosanjh.
This show marks the television debut of DiljitDosanjh. Unlike the majority of reality singing competition shows which have a number of celebrity judges, the format of Rising Star considers the viewers at home as the real judges and the celebrity trio as experts. For each and every performance, the viewers at home are able to decide, which contestant is fit to be sent to the next round and who should leave, in real time, by voting on the Colors TV app on their Android smartphones.
The experts on the show may influence the audience vote but not exceed 7% of the total voting power and with continuously decreasing percentage votes over the total public vote. The auditions for the show began on 4 Feb 2017 in Mumbai which lasted for a total of 8 episodes. All the contestants who made it through the auditions were paired by the judges to face off against each other in a duel, in the “Duels Ki Takkar” round. The hosting is done by Indian Idol fame Meiyang Chang along with dancer cum choreographer RaghavJuyal and broadcasts on Colors TV at 9:00 PM every Saturday and Sunday.
