Miss India was a TV serial that was aired on Doordarshan (DD1) on 19 May 2004 at 9:30 PM. Produced by Rupesh Gohil, under the banner of Utopia Production Pvt Ltd, the show was directed by debutante Sabir Mustaffa. In this show, the female lead was played by Bhojpuri actress Pakhi Hegde.
Pakhi portrayed the character of Suhani Sahay and another actress Shilpa Shinde played the role of Sanjana. Shilpa later became a Telugu actress too. Actor Prithvi Zutshi played Sanjana’s father.
Other veteran actors like Dalip Tahil, Shweta Kawatra, Kajal Sharma and Carran Kapur also had played the lead role in the series. Cricketer Vinod Kambli also made a debut in this set by playing the role of a photographer. The screenplay was by Brij Mohan; dialogues were written by Rajesh Saksham, cinematography by Mahendra Ryan and music composition was by Sachin.
The show was an attempt to focus that beauty pageant life is not only a path of roses but even full of thorns. This beauty pageant based TV series was premiered as ‘Miss India’ television serial and was also titled as ‘Main Banungi Miss India’ television series on Doordarshan. This tv show retained top position in DD1 for three years. It was on the telecast from June 2004 till its end the series fetched a lot of revenue for Doordarshan.
The production company RDG Production House became one of the key players in the television industry after the success of this serial. Later, it produced another series based on the life of air hostess too. In the year 2004, the series ran successfully on the top spot on DD national with highest TRP. The tv show ‘Miss India’ is a story of a journey and struggle of a small town girl to become Miss India with the backgrounds of the fashion industry.
The series depicted the fashion industry in grey colour and proved that a model’s life is full of thorns and not a bed of roses.
