Plot:
Six women from different backgrounds meet at a court. They have a common purpose: divorce from their husbands. What is the purpose of each woman? Why they are compelled to make this decision? Will the prospect of a divorce guarantee a more respectable life, or will it lead to a situation worse than before? This is what forms the core of the movie ‘Divorce’ plot.
Star Performances:
To be honest, there are very few actors who did an exceptional performance. However, the principal cast of the six women have been honest in their portrayal, even though their troubles were not given much due.
Analysis:
Divorce is a subject that is still taboo for many despite multiple cases on the rise. As such, making a movie on the same issue is never an easy job. However, Mini IG did attempt a moving, social drama around the subject, though the execution was far from impressive. There is no subtlety in this film and that is just the tip of the iceberg.
Malayalam cinema is no stranger to social dramas, especially those revolving around the emancipation of women. Unfortunately, 'Divorce' is just lip service. It neither explores the complex human relationships nor provides a credible solution to domestic arguments that worsen with either a lack of communication or the presence of ego in either of the partners.
Whether you like it or not, the 2021 flick ‘The Great Indian Kitchen’ at least made an earnest effort to explore the ills of patriarchy and how some women endlessly suffer for no fault of theirs. Unfortunately, ‘Divorce’ is more of a docudrama, with negligible focus on emotions and nuances.
Another thing that this film misses is relatability. No matter the language, one thing that an average moviegoer wants from a movie is some kind of relatability, which is missing from this flick. Worse, the way the movie is presented it looks more like a bland docudrama, which has negligible impact on the audience.
What’s There?
• Some emotional sequences
• Performances of some protagonists
What’s Not There?
• Lack of sound emotions
• Wafer thin storyline
• No inclination toward making an emotional drama
• Over dramatic dialogues, boring narrative
Verdict:
To sum it up, ‘Divorce’ is one social drama that people would like to miss. It is not awful, but despite the noble intention the movie is far from entertaining or engaging. Nobody likes a tasteless product whether on the table or the silver screen!
