Plot

A farmer’s son joins the Indian Army. Inspired by the words of the Prime Minister, he comes back to his village to make a change. Will he succeed?

Star Performances

The acting performances somehow save this film from becoming a complete trainwreck.

For all his flaws, at least Ramesh S Paravinaikar focused well on his acting part.

Analysis

Watching this film forces us to think about many aspects. What is a good social drama? Where does the line between social drama and propaganda blur? How do films with good intentions get ruined at the altar of execution?

If you’re thinking why this is being mentioned, it is because of late, many films are accused of being filled with ‘propaganda’, and doing lip service to a particular political dispensation. However, reality cannot be measured in black and white.

Propaganda is basically anything that is used to further a particular agenda. It is something that is less objective and more biased towards a particular unit or community. If we go by this basic definition, then ‘Namo Bharath’ has failed big time, since it is a bad product overall, that has little to do with any kind of propaganda.
The story is about a nationalist farmer, who joins the armed forces. While this may kind of remind you of a similar character played by Unni Mukundan Born on the 22nd of September, 1987, Unni Mukundan >> Read More... in the Malayalam film ‘Meppadiyan’, it is in no way as nuanced or thought-provoking. The narrative is way too loud, irrational, and at times plain boring.

The visuals are just not upto the mark. It looked as if a guy who specialized in Bhojpuri music videos was lifted up to do the camerawork for the entire movie! If that wasn’t enough, some of the sequences look like they were lifted directly from some popular YouTube parodies. Some of the scenes, that are meant to make the audiences emotional or aggressive, actually make them laugh their hearts out.

Is there anything remotely good in this film? Well, the acting performances are. Of course, the screenplay does little justice to the actors, but at least in terms of acting, Ramesh S Paravinaikar has done a good job. Bhavya, who plays the role of his mother, also does a fine job. The rest are just okay, since their performances can’t completely compensate for the mess created by the narrative

What's There?

  • Only a few acting performances

What's Not There?

  • Loud, over-the-top narrative
  • Extremely confusing transition of sequences
  • No emotional engagement with the viewers
  • Ludicrous dialogues

Verdict

‘Namo Bharath’ is one movie that had a great vision, but an extremely poor execution. It looks like the makers took inspiration from the wrong guys, and ended up making a parody film altogether. Only the acting performances of a few people somehow salvaged this film.
