Plot
A novice thief tries his luck at a palatial home to steal a priceless crystal. However, he is trapped inside. At the same time, a deaf and mute thief enters the same location, trying his best to achieve the crystal. On the other hand, a childless couple is looking for ways to adopt a child. Who will prevail in the end?
Star Performances
For an anthology film, Divakar Dimdima has done a surprisingly good job. Despite having nothing very innovative in the plot line, he did a fine job of creating an engaging narrative.
The ensemble cast also did justice to their respective roles. Amongst them, Yash Shetty, Santhosh Ashray, and Manasi Sudhir stand out for their brilliant performances.
Analysis
Making a good anthology in Indian cinema has always been a challenge, irrespective of which region you come from in Indian cinema. When you have nothing out of the blue for a story, the job becomes even tougher.
So how is ‘Jugalbandi’ as an anthology? This Kannada dramedy has at least three stories interconnected with a common theme: desire. Two bumbling thieves vying for the jackpot, while a childless couple aiming to get a child for themselves is not exactly a great start for a dramedy.
However, the way Divakar Dimdima has directed it changes the equation. Yes, the film is far from outstanding. However, unlike most of the Kannada releases in the past few weeks, ‘Jugalbandi’ is not boring either. It is surprisingly good in terms of delivering entertainment. If you’re one, who wants to be entertained, irrespective of the nuance or detail, ‘Jugalbandi’ is the film for you.
The pace of the film is uneven, in some cases, it is slightly sluggish as well. However, the cinematography, as well as the acting performances more than make up for that. Amongst them, Yash Shetty, Santhosh Ashray, and Manasi Sudhir stand out for delivering great performances, which lift the standards of this movie to a large extent. The sequence of the bumbling thieves is the best one, and each actor involved with the same leaves a solid impression. Â

Verdict
‘Jugalbandi’ is one film that not many would have looked forward to. However, the direction by Divakar Dimdima, as well as the narrative of the screenplay makes it a surprisingly good affair. The acting performances more than make up for the flaws of the film, if any. You can watch this for some mindless entertainment!
