), who has spent most of her life failing at romantic relationships on her quest to achieve her first orgasm. Kanika was raised by a Gynecologist single mother and has two female best friends. Kanika's mother decided to have her out of wedlock, but she intends on taking a different path for herself. We follow as she navigates her life, looking for love, making mistakes, moving past them, and the pattern continues. Sick of being in and out of relationships, Kanika finally accepts a marriage proposal, only for everything to go south in one night. The film follows the ups and downs that come Kanika's way.
Star performance
Bhumi Pednekar is reliably good. Shibani Bedi is the best out of the supporting cast members. The rest are hit-and-miss.
Analysis
Though the film’s subject is relatively fresh, the script for the film is pretty uneven. The film is filled with stereotypes about characters. Its understanding of the characters remains basic and never truly reaches any depth. It fails to develop any of them into three-dimensional beings. The characters feel frivolous at best and borderline unlikable at worst. The world doesn’t feel lived in. The film also doesn’t do justice to its subject matter simply because it’s too aware of what it’s trying to do. It never achieves its full potential. It means to be an unapologetic celebration of female sexuality and female solidarity, but ends up being shallow.
The empathetic female gaze the film has is the only relief. But there’s not a lot of insight about the genuinely important subject matter to be found here. The commentary on deep-rooted patriarchy and the archaic norms of society also never really goes anywhere. The film is also never let down by its loud pitch. Subtlety is nowhere to be found in this narrative. It’s full of tropes that feel unoriginal and preachy, as if the film is trying to teach the audience moral lessons. Its message of self-love and empowerment is too little in the middle of all the clutter.
What’s there?
• Fresh subject matter
• Good performances
What’s not there?
• Well-rounded characters are nowhere to be found
• The script is preachy and wildly uneven
Verdict
The film ignited high hopes with its topic of choice, but unfortunately, it ended up being one of the most disappointing films of the year. It doesn’t do justice to what it sets out to do and settles for cheap laughs and easy shots instead. Fans of Bhumi Pednekar and the crowd-pleasing supporting cast will also be disappointed by the lack of attention given to their characters. Most of them are reduced to stereotypes. Most of all, for a film that’s in the comedy genre, it's not very funny at all. It's a very missed opportunity.
