Plot
The Film "Mulk" is about a Muslim joint family from a town in India after one of their family members joins terrorism. Murad Ali Mohammed (Rishi Kapoor) lives peacefully with his joint family in Varanasi. He is a lawyer by profession. Every day, he does Namaz in a nearby mosque, after which he chats with his Hindu neighbors while enjoying tea at a tea shop. The joint family consists of Murad's wife, Tabassum (Neena Gupta); his son Aftab (Indraneil Sengupta), who stays abroad with his wife, Aarti (Taapsee Pannu), who is a lawyer; brother Bilaal (Manoj Pahwa), a mobile phone shop owner; brother's wife, Chhoti-Tabassum (Prachee Shah Pandya); nephew Shahid (Prateik Babbar); and niece Aayat (Vartika Singh).
The story starts on Murad’s 65th birthday. Aarti also visits. The family enjoys a lot together with their neighbors. But they are unaware that soon things are going to turn. Shahid (Murad’s nephew) has linked himself with a terrorist organization of Mehfooz Alam (Sumit Kaul). He is assigned a bomb blast task, which he executes with two other persons in Allahabad. A lot of innocent people lose their lives in this blast. SSP Danish Javed is charged with investigating this crime. He tracks down Shahid and shoots him dead when he tries to escape.
The Police arrive at Murad’s house and start questioning the family members. People begin to gather outside his residence. His neighbors, whom he had known for several decades, started considering him a terrorist. Bilaal (Shahid’s father) is taken into police custody. SSP Danish interrogates Bilal for more than 17 hours but gets no meaningful information. Bilal appears before the court, where Judge Harish Madhok (Kumud Mishra) rejects his bail and orders police custody for seven days. The situation in Murad’s neighborhood worsens. People start throwing stones inside his house, and Go back to Pakistan, is written on the boundary wall.

seeks to prove to the court that every member of Shahid’s family is involved in terrorist activity. Till now, Murad has been Bilal’s defense lawyer. But now, he is considered a person of interest in this case, and the court orders him to resign. Murad steps down, and Aarti becomes Bilal’s defense lawyer. Bilal suffers a fatal heart attack and passes away. Now, only Aarti can save his father-in-law and his family from all the allegations leveled against them. Will Aarti be successful in doing this?
Star Performance
Rishi Kapoor gave a perfect performance. He executes his part with patience and delicacy. His performance adds strength to the film. Taapsee Pannu is fantastic. Her dialogue delivery in the courtroom scenes is excellent. Kumud Mishra makes an outstanding cameo in this film. Prateik Babbar, unaware of anti-national sentiments, gave a terrific performance. The performances of Manoj Pahwa, Neena Gupta, and Ashutosh Rana are applaudable. The rest of the cast did everything required.
Analysis
Mulk ends with a strong message that we must change our "us and them" mentality to a mindset that is "we." The film targets Islamophobia. It sheds light on how citizens become victims of political agendas that aim to divide the nation in the name of religion. The film emphasizes that terrorism has no religion. We need to fight this prejudice against Muslims and eliminate all types of Islamophobia-related paranoia. We need to think about what being secular means and determine whether our behaviors are in line with the principles of secularism.

In the generation we are living in, when our country is divided along religious lines, and those lines are getting deeper, Mulk is a film of vital importance. Mulk is a courageous and essential movie that everyone should watch. It carries a strong message that the quality of a true Indian and a real patriot is accepting people of every religion with an open heart. Mulk will touch your heart.
