Analysis
Have you ever wondered about the purpose of films? Are they just sources of entertainment? Or should they convey something? Are they influential? Well, this also depends upon the kind of films. There are both these films. Films that are mere sources of entertainment and films that convey messages deliberately or sometimes casually. Laapataa Ladies belongs to the latter. It has a strong message(s) and is conveyed casually throughout the film. Sarcastically mainly. The film stands out because of its direction, the captivating narration, and its performances. The subtle emotions of each actor in this film are just too effortless. That’s the beauty of this film. In 2024, with everything so advanced, it is a risk to make things look convincing in films, especially considering that the film is set in 2001. The production design team has put its soul into making that work by giving acute attention to the details. But why was it set in 2001? Probably to convince the story and the drama revolving around it. Mostly because if it had happened today, the search for the missing bride would be much easier than in 2001, when the technology was not advanced, and the Nokia phone was a luxury. Also, the state in which the film is set, Nirmal Pradesh, literally means ‘a place that’s pure.’ Even though small, this film discusses various topics, including patriarchy, gender inequality, misogyny, etc., through humor and sarcasm, and these resonate with the viewers. As it is clear from the trailer, teaser and posters, the film is not merely about love and romance but mainly a social satire that explores feminist themes like gender roles and social expectations. The fact the brides were ‘swapped’ and ‘misplaced’ like some luggage shows that even today, girls are seen as a commodity, and in many areas, they are still brought up just for marriage. Another striking factor is the use of ghoonghat or veil as a character in the film. This one tool is used as something that is imposed on women and represents their struggle to express themselves (self-expression) and their autonomy. Adding to this, Pushpa (the one who is mistaken for Phool), while in the police station with Deepak, on asking for a photograph, says, “Bina ghoonghat ke photo Nahi khichwayenge. Badnaami Hogi,” meaning the photo cannot be taken without the veil as it causes dishonour. With all these issues being discussed, Laapataa Ladies is a small and independent film with a big heart.
What’s There?
• Stellar performances
• With all the mainstream cinemas in Bollywood, Laapataa Ladies stands out for its originality and sincere storytelling.
• Interesting and engaging sequence of events.
• The film conveys a great message and discusses many social issues.
What’s Not There?
• It is difficult to find anything lacking in such films, but as we talk about this, is it possible to make such changes quickly? Somewhere in the film, it feels that the change is happening a little too quickly.
Verdict
There is a gap of 14 years between Kiran Rao’s directorial debut ‘ Dhobi Ghat Click to look into! >> Read More... ’ and her second film Laapataa Ladies. And waiting this long, is worth it. Laapataa ladies, celebrates womanhood. And what’s more beautiful than women telling women stories? It is a must-watch film for all. Who knows, it could even be unlearning for many!
